How to Install
Interconnect Smoke Alarms
ISA Interconnect Smoke Alarms are designed for easy DIY installation. No electrician needed for battery models — just mount, connect and you’re done.
Can I Install a Smoke Alarm Myself?
Yes. ISA battery-powered smoke alarms are designed for easy DIY installation — no electrician required. Simply mount the base plate to the ceiling, insert the battery, and pair your alarms together. The whole process takes minutes.
Only AC 240v mains-powered smoke alarms require a licensed electrician. If you’re replacing an existing wired alarm, you’ll need the AC model and a qualified sparky.
Tools You Need
- Drill & screwdriver
- Stepladder
- Screws with wall plugs (included in box)
- Adhesive mounting tape (alternative option)
Step-by-Step Installation
Follow these simple steps to get your ISA smoke alarms installed and compliant
Choose the Right Alarm for Your Home
ISA photoelectric smoke alarms in the 10-year DC Battery version are the best choice for most homes — easiest to install with no electrician required. If you already have AC 240v wired alarms, you’ll need the AC model and a licensed electrician to replace them.
Plan Your Placement
Under Queensland legislation, smoke alarms must be installed in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every level. Review the placement diagrams below or check the legislation page for full requirements.
Mount the Base Plate
Hold the base plate against the ceiling where you want to install it. Mark the screw holes with a pencil, drill pilot holes, and secure the base plate firmly with the included screws and wall plugs. Alternatively, use the included adhesive tape for a no-drill option.
Connect & Pair the Alarms
ISA Wireless Interconnected Smoke Alarms pair automatically with each other — no hub, no Wi-Fi, no complicated setup. Just press and connect. When one alarm triggers, all alarms in the home sound simultaneously. The entire pairing process takes just a few minutes.
Test Your Alarms
Once installed, press and hold the test button on each alarm to confirm they’re working correctly. When one alarm is triggered, all interconnected alarms should sound together. Refer to the included manual for detailed test instructions.
Ongoing Maintenance
Test your alarms once every month by pressing the test button — it only takes seconds. Every 6 months, gently vacuum around the alarm vents to remove dust and debris that may affect sensitivity. With a sealed 10-year lithium battery, there’s no battery replacement needed for the life of the alarm.
